Spirit of Radio Ga-Ga

According to the Portland Press Herald, WCLZ, the only local commercial radio station I bother listening to, is being sold. Their parent company is buying out ABC Radio, and needs to divest some stations. A notice on CLZ’s website says “it is our hope” that whoever buys the station will keep it the way it is, but given the bottom line mentality of the radio business today, I’m not too optimistic.

They’ve been sold before, and the new owner turned it into a standard “Hot AC” station, pandering to the “Best Mix of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and now” market who like all kinds of music. Apparently, there was enough of an outcry from former listeners that they reverted back to their AAA format, so ther may still be hope, even if the new owners do screw things up royally.

Apparently, this has been on the books for a while (the site linked here posted the news back in March), so I’m curious as to why the Press Herald’s reporting it now.

Sorry to hear. CLZ doesn’t come in very well here in Rockland, but it was a station I listened to when I got farther south.

I got so disenfranchised with FM, I bought an XM. I thought I’d never pay for radio. I’m glad I did. In fact, Susan and I loved it so much, we bought a second unit. Now I have one in my car, and she has one for her car and the house.

Yeah…if money wasn’t so tight right now I’d likely be looking into the whole XM/Sirius thing too.
