Lenten Feed Fast

Before I begin this post, I just want to say a quick “Happy Birthday” to my lovely wife Carla. :)

Ash Wednesday was last week, so this entry is a bit late by the liturgical calendar. Oh well.

The season of Lent has begun, and like many people who profess some form of Christian faith, my mind has turned to thoughts of sacrifice. I decided to answer the question “what are you giving up for Lent?” a little differently this year.

My brother-in-law usually gives up hope for Lent. All the other usual stuff - meat, alcohol, whatever - wasn’t really doing it for me, until I realized how much time I’ve spent online getting overloaded by information that rarely adds anything of significance to my life.

The most telling symbol of my info-overload was my Google Reader account. It wasn’t unheard of for me to be getting over 100 new items from different RSS feeds each day. Once I stepped back and saw how ridiculous this was, I knew then what I must do. I systematically deleted almost every feed from my Google reader account. The only sites that survived were a site with daily readings for Lent, the daily Get Fuzzy comic (because everyone should have room for a deluded, psychotic cat in their day), and blogs/websites by friends I know in real life.

It’s working out well so far - I’ve actually found that I have a bit more of an attention span, and have only mentally slipped a few times, wondering “Gee, I wonder what those crazy kids at Popdose and Rifftrax are going on about these days?”

The bible says Jesus was tempted in every way that we are. I wonder sometimes, does that even include mp3 blogs?
