Silver lining found.
Optimism is too much work. Thus, I’ve removed the sidebar of “Things Going Right.” Just too much extra overhead in the day, y’know?
This won’t, however, keep me from posting stuff like this:
Monday, when the worst of the storm hit, I was having issues with my windshield wipers. The driver’s side wiper kept getting stuck - the wiper arm would fully extend, but never go back down. In a torrential downpour, this is a bad thing.
I spent a good portion of my drive in to work with the window open, getting rained on, my hand on the side of the front windshield, creating a barrier for the wiper so it had something to bump up against and start its trajectory downward. I came into work like the proverbial wet cat, albeit with dishpan hands and a soaked pantleg.
I’d read online that my particular year and model of car had a recall based on the windshield wiper motor. The closest Hyundai dealer’s service department either had no power or was taking Patriots Day off, but after a round of frantic phone calls to service shops that either had no technicians (all their mechanics were bailing out their basements, apparently) or no power, I found a place that could take a look at it that day, set an appointment, and was on my way.
No sooner did I venture out into the tempest once more (with a few wiper hand-stops for good measure) and park my vehicle at the shop, to find they had lost power since I called.
Undaunted, the mechanic decided to take a look at it anyway. We both stood outside in the wetness as I show him the affected wiper. He rushed back into the shop and came back with a couple of wrenches. A quick tightening of the bolt that holds the wiper arm, and my problem was fixed.
I was too grateful to feel stupid, although a wave of “that’s all it was?” did wash over me. He didn’t even charge me for it, although I’m sure lack of electricity was part of the reason.
I got a potentially serious issue with my car fixed easily and for free. Through the storm, we never lost power at our house, and our basement was no more flooded than usual.
We’ve got a lot to be thankful for…

In any event, this post led to some very humerous imagery. Ah, schadenfreude… (if it helps, I had to change clothes three times that day shooting the storm, with almost no useable photos to show for it)
