What I wasn’t blogging about, part 1

With the beginning of a new year, I’ve decided to “clear the decks” and bring you all up to date on the major events of my life for the past few months. To do so, I need to rewind a bit to…wow, was it almost 2 years ago? *Cue “Wayne’s World” dream sequence/flashback sound*…

March/April 2005

It made so much sense we didn’t know why we hadn’t thought of it before. There were millions of children worldwide that needed a home and a loving family. If, as it seemed, we wouldn’t be able to have a child biologically, why not look into adoption?

We were attending an informational session for America World Adoption Agency with some friends of ours who had also been trying to have kids for years. We weren’t there of our own accord - just tagging along as moral support for our friends.

We had decided over a year previous to this that we wanted kids. We didn’t, however, want to get too “medical” in our pursuit of a family. If conception was going to require surgery or other invasive procedures, we didn’t want to go through it. We pursued this “natural” method for a little over a year with no results.

In a way, we can blame Steven Curtis Chapman for what was about to happen. We’d seen him in concert a few weeks prior to this. Between sets, the on stage video screen was dedicated to showing a presentation about Shaohannah’s Hope, an organization he and his wife founded to financially assist international adoptions. The kids were adorable, and the message, especially about the plight of Chinese girls in orphanages, was undeniable, but we were there for a concert. It didn’t change our minds about having a biological child, but it did plant a seed in us.

About halfway through the America World session, this seed bloomed with amazing force. What was once a nice idea became a much more vital thing. We talked and prayed for days afterward, wanting to make sure we were doing the right thing, until we were certain this was God’s will.

We were going to adopt a child from overseas.
