Any admins in the house?

Edit: This has been resolved as of about 5 minutes ago. I was finally able to explain to the hosting dude what I needed…

Can anyone help a cueless n00b out? I’m at a loss here, and, as they say over at Ask MetaFilter, my Google-fu is failing me.

How does one find out if a particular shared virtual hosting environment has access to MySQL?

I’ve inherited co-design/development responsiblities for our church website. It’s been set up for ages on the proverbial “space someone gave us for free.” It seems like a decent hosting package — Red Hat linux, Apache server, etc, all the standard “basic” stuff. I’ve been wanting to change the site from static brochure-ware to a dynamic, cms-powered site, so MySQL would prove incredibly helpful…

The administrators of the account seem to think we should have database access, but aren’t really familiar with the nuts and bolts of it. Of course, there’s nothing like PhpMyAdmin in the control panel, and that’s the only way I’ve ever been able to do anything database-wise. I’m pretty much a complete stranger to the command line, at least in a Linux environment.

I do know Php4 is installed, as I had to set that up from the control panel.

So, it’s a long shot, I know…but anyone have any ideas?

  1. I’d contact the server’s administrator, myself.

Given my limited readership, I suppose I should have just titled this post, “You there, GFM?” ;)

Anyway, it’s weird having to deal with two levels of system admins, instead of just going to the source for tech support…but I got it figured out.
