I don’t miss the driving…
This past weekend we put about 900 miles on our car, driving to Plains Mennonite Church in Hatfield, Pennsylvania and back for our friend Paul’s wedding. It was the first time I’d ever been in PA, and what really struck me was how nice the area seemed. Manicured lawns, new (or newly-remodeled) houses, road signs and traffic signals that appeared relatively new…it was quite a sight for these eyes used to northern suburban New England and its “historic” decay.
The wedding was beautiful, and completely non-traditional. To give you a little idea of just how non-traditional, the bride and groom sang Waterdeep’s “Both of Us’ll Feel the Blast,” then led us all in a Justin McRoberts worship song toward the end. Their recessional was “Send Me On My Way” by Rusted Root.
Thanks to Yahoo! we got lost on the way there, and ended up about an hour late - not for the wedding, but the reception, which they chose to have before the wedding. I played piano for the wedding march (the hymn, “For the Beauty of the Earth”). I played a few other hymns as guests entered the sanctuary, with Paul’s sister joining on violin - it was a real treat to have some instrumental interplay with another musician who plays instinctively rather than “by the notes.” Since she wasn’t familiar with the songs, she improvised in the same key, giving me an chance to stretch out, too…it was cool.
The trip was awesome (and gave me the chance to put together an Ultimate 6-disc Road Trip Mix CD collection - no, I don’t need an IPod…) but it’s even better to be back home, no longer wearing down the road…
