Quote of the [your favorite measure of time here]

Overheard at a Denny’s last week in a loud conversation that otherwise appeared to be about corporate sales:

The phoenix is a symbolic symbol of dying to thyself.

Speaking of utter randomness, did I ever tell you about the time I was at a lunch break during a writer’s conference, when soon-to-be pulitzer prize winning poet Stephen Dunn sat next to me? It was awkward. I was terrified. We were the only two sharing the picnick table. He mentioned something about the weather and tennis. I’m an idiot concerning both. I was also having horrible flashbacks to the year before, when I approached him after a reading, and, for some reason, told him I usually didn’t like poetry. He asked me why not. The fact was, I didn’t read poetry, and still don’t. So I did I even know if I didn’t like poetry? It’s like if someone asks you whether you prefer to drive a standard or automatic, and you say automatic, because you never learned to drive a standard. It’s these horrible things that keep you up at 4 a.m., thinking. Anyway, someone finally sat with Dunn and I during lunch. They talked about tennis. I slinked off.
