Another late night over doughnuts

Carpe diem? On Sunday, it was more like we throttled, not seized the day. Two church services, a Baptist association meeting, a road trip, and a concert – yeah, this day was pretty well seized.

The concert, you ask? We went with a couple of friends to see Derek Webb. For many of you, that will be all I need to say. You’re already familiar with his history as guitarist/songwriter for Caedmon’s Call, his songs that speak to everyday concerns as well as “things above,” his passion for authenticity in the Christian life, his between-song testimony and teaching, and his way with a story. Those who aren’t – I urge you to seek out his album She Must and Shall Go Free, then see him live the first chance you get (or get his upcoming live album, “The House Show” for the best of both worlds).

Setlist was…umm…I wasn’t keeping track. I was too “in the moment” to ruin it by writing everything down. I did try to remember what he played afterward (though I couldn’t remember the order), and have a list written down at home – I’ll try to post it later. He did an encore of Rich Mullins’ “Hope to Carry On” (made semi-famous by he and his Caedmon’s bandmates a few years back), and left us all feeling challenged in our faith and energized. After the show I met a fellow Caedmon’s/Derek fan from rmfo.net, “Nth” Mike Escutia, which was also pretty cool.

As if that weren’t enough, I experienced the wonder of Krispy Kreme doughnuts after the show. The infamous “Hot Fresh” sign wasn’t lit up when we got there, but they were just starting their last batch of doughnuts for the night. We got to watch the doughnuts move down the conveyor belt, starting from raw dough, through to the deep fryer, under a waterfall of icing, and into the box. A perfectly sweet end to a very cool evening.

    Where’d you get Krispy Kremes? You can’t be at home. Where’s the closest to us, MA somewheres? I had them for the first time last year in Florida. Every time the hot light was on, we pulled in. I’d love to have some. I love Dunkin D’s, but a hot KK is the stuff. (On the downside, though, they can’t make a chocolate cake donut. Dunkin D’s still has the best there.)

    {{Neil Diamond}}Turn on the hot light, let it shine wherever you go…{{/Neil}}

    Yeah, we were in the outskirts of Boston. The concert was in Quincy at Eastern Nazarene College, and the KK was right off Rt. 93 in Medford.
