Andrew
and Carla Thomas's first public performance together was an unrehearsed
rendition of Amy Grant's "Thy Word" that would have been
wonderful had they remembered the verses to the song. Since then,
their passionate, harmony-laden, keyboard-based sound has helped
them overcome such inauspicious beginnings to become known as one
of New England's premier contemporary Christian acts. A songwriter from the age of 11, Andrew had been recording and gigging as a solo artist prior to their stage debut, with Carla supporting him by manning the merchandise table, helping with sound checks, and cheering her husband on from the audience. In 2001, Andrew released a 5-song CD called Young Man’s Fancy that collected the best of his older songs and showcased his new spiritual direction on songs like "Still." The CD, and the gigs that followed from it, provided just the right momentum to get him started collaborating with other musicians. When he began work on the full-length follow up, Prodigal Songs, he involved several others in the recording process, most notably bringing Carla in to sing backing vocals. From then on, his shows began incorporating Carla's vocals more and more, until, to quote Andrew, "it didn't make any sense to keep calling us 'Andrew Thomas.'"
Andrew and Carla perform a mix of Andrew’s originals and select covers. "What we hope to do with this music," says Andrew, "is point people toward the unseen and eternal." Whether through worship or outreach, Andrew and Carla Thomas strive to exemplify this with their music and lives. And they've been known to throw in a cover of "Thy Word" every once in a while, verses and all. | |
